An architecturally pleasing courthouse in downtown Christiansburg as show in newspapers this past year. Historic Preservation. Tourism thrust. Neighborhood historical overlays. Public transportation (lightrail, elevated mono rail). Regional cooperation. Eco tourism. Bed and breakfast industry. VDOT and town of Christiansburg designing/building attractive corridor, streets, and highways for a change. An art center in downtown Cburg. More restaurants and coffeeshops in downtown Cburg.
00004

No more residential, commercial, or industrial development towards the river and the Brush Mountain area needs to be preserved as green space. Wooded habitat for the wildlife. Clean up what we have before we allow more urban sprawl.

00005
I would like to see the town of Christiansburg become a town full of businesses, coffee shops, specialty shops, theaters (both live and film) -- businesses & shops & cultural activities which would e*ich the lives of people living here. Excellent public transportation (including passenger trains stopping in Cambria), an active awareness of creating a cleaner environment, recycling, etc., more extensive bike trails connecting Christiansburg downtown to link aat the mall. Zoning which protects the integrity of neighborhoods being enhanced. A sense of pride & community. PLANNED GROWTH.

00006
I would like to see Montgomery County retail its rural settings. The "urban sprawl" seen @ 114 & 460 intersections is large enough & should be contained in that area with better traffic control in the future plans.

00013

Green & open areas preserved, more cluster growth, stopped urban sprawl. More public transportation, stoplights - all equiped with photo cameras to catch & ticket those who run lights. Public or municipal water available all over the county

00016
Stop roadside dumping

00017
Keep farmers in the business of farming as opposed to land developers

00019
Consolidate development - Stop sprawl - Preserve natural resources

00021
I would like to see the county with sustainable, directed, intelligent growth with an emphasis on protection of the environment and providing reasonable cost housing to serve a diversity of residents. Blacksburg has become too expansive and consequently too white that diversity is not proomoted or encouraged. I do not want to see the county allow that to be repeated in Christiansburg though they have allowed it to start in Riner

00035
Quality of life in all phases of land, water, and air get up to the highest standards as possible, and or improved.

00038
Rural quality of life: Limit growth

00046
A community where realestate taxes are moderate, agricultural operations are still abundant, schools are high quality, stickbuilt affordable housing replaces mobile homes, development is concentrated in growth areas served by public water, sewer & mass transit services, large contigeous areas of farm and forest lands are protected by conservation easements, a full array of cultural amenities are available to all citizens, a wide array of commercial shopping & services are available, higher wages w/good benefits type jobs and business/industries are provided in quality facilities eg. well designed industrial parks & multi-use shopping/residential centered, quality parks that meet the needs of wide variety of interest (festivals, amphitheaters, etc.)

00049
Cleaner ground water; education to farmers and polluters to improve the New River Watershed; Cleaner, more attractive place for all peoples.

00051
Public and civic groups - seeking problem solving in cleaner ground water shed in NRV, through educators to farmers and landowners of ground pollution. 911 address - house numbers for fire, police, & life saving)

00059
A county where our children can have affordable education, clean air & senior citizens can afford to keep farms and home and not sell to pay the taxes. Good roads in rural areas

00060
The Environmental Defense Web Site lists our county among the 20% most polluted counties in the U.S. (air & water). We need to find ways to decrese pollution froom RAAP, Celanese plant, power companies, etc. to make our air & water safer: Decrease sprawl by encouraging more compact housing development & building smaller & more compact & affordable homes

00063
A balance of greenspace with industry & commercialism. You can't please everyone all of the time but Mont. Co. has always had an agruculture base and you should try to preserve that if at all possible

00072
More and improved educational facilities: Less unplanned development: More green

00075
50m pool - indoor/outdoor: Arts Center - children & adults, B'burg Middle School (B'burg Regional Art Assoc.) Septic system and water concerns (Riner, Price's Fork)

00076
Not congested: Dowtowns vital: Green spaces: Developers pay impact fees

00091
Controlled growth with plenty of green space still left. A vital downtown area with parking, theater, and shopping. Affordable recreational facilities.

00093
New/renovated schools: Family oriented places to go - skating rink, new mall, new movie theater: Still agriculture land kept intact for that part of our economy

00096
I would like for the county to preserve as much of the natural beauty as possible. Attentiveness to town sprawl is important -- zoning: Affordable housing is important

00098
Montgomery County needs to try to maintain a rural feel with some urban development if possible. I don't want to see this become a metropolitan type area. Part of the charm of the county is the rural feel with opportunities available for citizens to better themselves.

00101
Schools with enough classrooms so there is no need for mobile unites for classrooms: Protected agriculture areas: Environmentally safe industrial sites

00102
I would like to see high tech companies coming here so that more jobs are available. This would especially attract those that do not want to live in a big city. The most important aspect of this is to maintain the natural beauty of this area, while building new facilities. I would also appreciate more diverse shopping options so that I don't have to travel to Roanoke for things that I need.

00111
Not congested. Control growth to existing "nodes". Our Appalachian Mts. Are beautiful--lets accentuate them and the River. Utilize VA Tech's strengths to the County's max benefit (jobs, educational opportunitis, amphitheater, sports venus, concerts)

00113
I would like to see a place where my children and grandchildren are in a place much like today. They do not need to travel to get away from the urban growth of the area. I also want them to have the same high quality water that is available. They should have even more educational opportunities than are available now.

00122
Maintenance of open space and an agricultural base will limit the growth in the need for services and their cost and will serve to enhance the beauty, diversity, and tourism of the area. Population stabilization can be a desirable goal and will be essential if a significant portion of the county is to maintained as greenspace

00132
Need to leave areas of open spaces, farmland, less residential development in Riner area

00134
I would like to see Mont. Co. in 23 years reflect the result of good planning now. Less sprawl. As much greenspace as is reasonable preserved. Rivers and streams and air all cleaner than they are at present. Smart job growth. In other words - Focust on Sustainability.

00135
Educational opportunities for children: Open space preservation, cleaner air & water

00137
Continued growth in traffic leads to poor air quality along with continued road building. Leaving children and grandchildren with a huge parking lot is not my idea of a bright future. People are willing to build/buy out further from town and drive to places of work or to run errands. This, in turn, creates more traffic (ie. Rt 8 which was a fairly remote area 20 years ago).

00141
Superior public schools - with high standards; Parks, open space, outdoor recreational facilities; Clean air/water; Clean up New River

00142
I would like to see preservation of natural conditions, home development planning rather than sprawl. I would like to make it more accessible with local train service. I'd like to see more community events sponsored by VA Tech & Radford University

00143
Protect Brown's Farm & places like it; Zone Blacksburg - places for college students & neighborhoods for families; No more stop lights; Indoor pool for C'burg

00144
I hope that Montgomery County (in 23 yrs) will be a place that natural spaces, parks, areas have been preserved and at the same time opportunities for a variety of jobs/professions has improved and education is of higher quality with improved saleries for teacher & smaller class sizes for students

00145
Montgomery Co. is growing rapidly - lets not forget to monitor well a "planned" growth, protecting the natural scenic beauty of the county - at all times

00146
Indoor pool in Christiansburg; Traffic problems around mall area/entrance, exits; Less "developments", more care of existing buildings, historic buildings, areas; Downtown Christiansburg revitalization; Recycling pick-up; Keep open spaces, preserve farms; Activities - safe - for teenagers

00149
Planned growth to preserve green space, clustering residences & commerce near utilities; mixed residential & light business good public transportation, bike and pedestrian friendly; good public school facilities with adequate supplies and well-paid teachers.

00150
I would like to see Montgomery County remain a very family - oriented place to live. We need adequate recreational facilities for families and for children of all ages. I would like to see much of the natural areas of the county remain undeveloped so that my grandchildren can enjoy the beauty of the mountains also.

00152
Clean water & air and a partly rural population; Limit growth so area doesn't become too urban. Continued safety - low crime

00153
Some important aspects: Clean, environmentall safe; Jobs - good schools - health care facilities; Recreational facilities for all age groups.

00156
Preserving the natural beauty of this area is first. Do this by strict control of signage especially near the highways

00158
Clean up ugly areas: Develop downtown; New schools: Better recreational facilities: Indoor pool for C'burg; No trailers at school sites

00159
Traffic congestion, blooming business (including small, private businesses) but yet preserve open land and environment

00162
More protective open land areas like the Brown Farm, and the area above the old Blacksburg Middle School. More recreation areas for hiking & biking

00163
I would like to see areas defined as far a residential, commercial, & industrial - Mostly I would like to see a unified county - not Blacksburg and the rest of the county - I would hope that areas such as the Little River would be protected - a system to protect the water (esp. ground water) would be ineffective.

00170

Well equipped schools; cleaner roads; artisan friendly; I do not want to leavy my children/grandchildren in filthy sprawl I lef in North Virginia

00171

More public transportation; Continued emphasis on good public schools which are technologically up-to-date; Preserve open space for parks; Limit sprawl; More rec centers.

00173

A place that retains it's vibrant higher educational communities and facilities. A county that has retained and continues to value it's natural resources and beauty. A Thriving agricultural, and hopefully, mor sustainable agricultural, community with farmers markets and community supported agricultural projects

00178
Extensive use of land trusts to protect agricultural and natural areas. Cluster housing to produce or maintain "village" - like neighborhoods. Dedicated public access parks and recreational areas. Elimination of strip mall mentality. Rebuild downtown business core of Radford, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Prices Fork, Elliston, Shawsville, Riner, etc.

00179

Widening 81, better planning w/Blacksburg - Christiansburg traffic lights (timing), better planning, new shopping center parking lots, keeping parks and recreation areas, more cultural events, more large name concerts, libraries and rec areas in Shawsville/Riner areas, changes made to Blacksburg pollution problems, & taxes raised to ut more money into public schools.

00180

I would like my children and grandchildren to be able to see empty fields and acres of forest, not miles and miles of housing developments. I think that our goals should be to preserve the land and culture that has been successful for centuries

00181

A community with a good transportation system; Much open space; Good community facilities such as parks, recreation facilities, and governmental facilities; efficient government; excellent utilities such as water, sewer, refuse collection; and controlled developement

00183

Regionalized public libraries in the NRV; Preservation of natural resources; Public transportation to aid in cutting down air pollution; Water - air; Affordable housing; Better health facilities

00185

A place much like it is today, where we have good schools, a clean & confortable lifestyle, and few negatives like crime, traffic, pollution, etc. I would like to see more opportunities for citizen involvement in decisions that effect the county and some way to ensure that elected officals and other decisionmakers are responsive to the public voice. Montgomery County should not look like Charlottesville in 2025 - too much like a little city w/all the related problems.

00188

A countywide approach rather than town community interests. Open areas! Agriculture, natural areas - (conservancy)

00189

More walk & bicycle friendly environment; Automobile control - too much pollution; Orderly development

00190

Lots of open, undeveloped areas maintained for the benefit of the general public; Growth that has occurred in compliance with a comprehensive plan designed to direct & contain growth/sprawl, maintain visual appeal of commercial areas (sign ordinances, plantings, etc). Strong infrasturcture of public facilities - recreation, public transportation, schools, libraries, etc.

00191

Montgomery will continue to be a higher education center for the state with a strong economic base in private sector w/high-tech and bio tech jobs. The major roadways into town will be scenic roads views protected by easements. Farms will continue in areas such as Riner & Catawba. Residential is concentrated around urban centers

00192

Increased educational facilities; Increased light industry/ecologically friendly to accommodate projected employment needs; Preservation of green space, forests and water sheds including mapping & protection of wet weather streams

00193 Healthy environment; Little congestion, pollution; Strong school system, excellent education opportunities; Well maintained recreational opportunities & facilities

00194
The attraction to Montgomery County for our family is the availability of outdoor activities and the beautiful scenary. We enjoy having access to the New River and we have frequently used bike trails that have been built on old railroad beds. There are also the wonderful opportunities to participate in community plays and choral musical groups. These types of diverse opportunities are the reason that we have chosen to raise our children in this area
00195

Rich mixture of green space with development; Well recognized for the quality of the schools (and associated funding); Ability to handle and welcome senior citizens; Maintain as much as possible the rural nature of the county

00196

Keep forested areas; Limit growth to already developed areas to protect agricultural heritage; Do not allow development above ridge lines; Protect area to generate tourism, such as birding trail - hiking & biking - foliage tours - scenic driving tours - tourism generates more revenue than residential & commercial development with required infrastructure

00197

We need to insure that working farms and undeveloped forests remain: Ground water must be protected: More attention must be devoted to recycling.

00198

Billboards eliminated; Overhead utility lines drastically reduced; Clean, high-tech industry expansion; Eliminate unsightly junked cars & appliances (ie Rt 8 south of Christiansburg)
