Guide to Mostly On-line and Mostly Free U.S. Geospatial and Attribute Data
A good starting point if you are trying to find geospatial data for maps.
Virginia Giospatial and Statisical Data Center (GEOSTAT)
The site is provided by the University of Virginia Library and includes materials on 2000 Census Redistricting Results, and Domestic Economic, Education, Historical, International, Social, Demographic, and Behavioral Data for Virginia.
A site provided by the University of Colorado. The site provides an excellent overview to Map Projections and cartography.
Bar none, Oddens' Bookmarks is the single most comprehensive collection of maps on the web (currently 13,800 map links).
THE WWW VIRTUAL LIBRARY: CARTOGRAPHY RESOURCES
A general links resource, the Virtual Library collection includes materials from the government and education sites, materials on digital elevation models, map libraries, and GIS tools.
COLOR LANDFORM ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES
The map collection is organized by state and provides a variety of maps for use in the classroom. For example, the Virginia map page includes a shaded relief map, a county map, a satellite image, and a Virginia map from 1895, as well as other materials.
Housed at the University of Virginia, the cultural maps collection is a digital American Historical Atlas and provides a broad range of materials, as well as links to other collections and resources.
Association for Geographic Information (United Kingdom)
A website covering the mathematics of mapping, including background material, problems, resources, lesson plans, and references.
This site provides a guide to teaching students about Compass Directions.
LATITUDE (linked through AbsoluteAuthority.com)
This site provides a compendium of information on cartography, the use of maps and cartographic tools, as well as a historical perspective on the impact of the discovery of latitude, longitude, and invention and use of navigational tools. In addition, the site authors provide an extensive list of online educational materials on cartography, geography, and related sciences.
